What Questions to Ask when Renting an Apartment

renting an apartmentWhen renting an apartment, the last thing you want is to make a mistake when you choose which one. First of all, you should talk to other people who live in the building in order to avoid any regrets about your choice. You should also ask your landlord some questions. The following are some important issues that you should deal with before you sign the lease.

Noise

Noise problems in an apartment can be very bothersome. In order to avoid moving into a loud building ask your landlord about the policies towards noise and how these are implemented. Also, ask the other tenants if they have heard trains or planed, or whether or not there are dogs and/or noisy neighbours.

Parking

If you have a car or you may get one in the future, ask your landlord if there is parking included with the rent. Also, ask the landlord about the price of additional parking, or guest parking. Then ask the tenants if they can always find a parking spot. This is very important, because the last thing you want to do is arrive home late at night from work and have no place to park.

Transportation

If you do not have a car find out about public transit and where the nearest stop or station is. Also, if this could be an issue ask both the landlords and the tenant about snow removal. Make sure that it is early enough so that you can leave to go to work in time in the morning.

Laundry

Ask the landlord where the washer and dryers are, and go have a look at them. Check out how many there are and how many units would be using it. Also, the tenants would have some insight on this as they regularly use them. Find out if they ever have to wait for laundry or if there are always some available.

Fire and security

These questions are some that may not cross your mind, but they are very important because this is a matter of safety for you. Ask the landlord what kind of fire protection and security features they have in the building. Also, ask tenants if the main entrance is always locked.
These are not the only questions you need to ask the landlord and/or tenants, but it covers the basis. Make a list of questions you want to ask both prior to talking to them. Add anything else that is of importance to you.

Asking previous tenants what they thought of the place is the best way to know the true pros and cons of the place.
